The Black Shoemakers Society
I see there is some real confusion out there. Poor Martha getting blamed for something that simply isn't her fault.
As far as I know, the dictum prohibiting wearing white after labor day precedes her by almost a hundred years. And Martha, isn't that old.
It had to do with the cleaning and clothing practices of the rich, and those who weren't who tried to act like them.
White was difficult both to make. wear, and of course keep clean. White cottons were sunbleached, which made it easier for summer wearing, and of course for anyone, white shoes in winter would have been daunting in snow and sleet.

The same fool that said you couldn't wear white before Memorial Day.
"Wear What You Like - Like What You Wear" -- do not let your life be dictated by others.
