at which point do you click on IE and it takes 5 minutes to load?

If you run IE or any application right after the OS loads, probably it will be waiting as other software is being loaded. Many software such as anti virus and YM loads automatically when you boot up your computer, and they start loading after your OS finish loading.

There's the hard disk LED on your system unit front part, it will blink when your hard disk is active, so let everything load up first when you start your PC. Only start working after the hard disk LED stop lighting up.

I would say major. To boot up a computer from a startup...yes...but if windows is already launched and running and it takes 5 minutes to launch explorer, thats a problem. See where it resides and on which drive. Otherwise re-configure.

check your firewalls - they can slow you down. If you have a dial up you need short phone connection leads.
