My Cold water stopped working in upstairs shower. It works in the sink, but nothing comes out in shower. Any suggesstions before I call a plumber? Does it sound llike something that can be easily (cheaply) fixed?

How handy are you? and, what type of tools do you have? what type of valve stem or faucet is this?

You see it may have slipped in the socket and just needs tightening but, if it's like a Moen then you need a special wrench for it. Don't even try it, it just won't work without that special wrench. I spent $34.00 for mine.

Turn off the water, at least the cold, under the sink. Unsnap the cover for the screw on top of the valve, there's usually a plastic cover to make it look nice.
Then you'll see, sometimes, a Phillips screw, take this out. Life the valve up, if it has one. it won't come easy. It may unscrew so don't reef on it.
If it's a normal valve(common) it will have a washer on the bottom, don't lose this. See if there anything wrong or, go to Home Depot and ask the guy in plumbing what's wrong, he'll get you the replacements and, put it back together.
You just saved yourself $75.00 bucks.

Good suggestion by cowboydoc, I have had shower faucets and sinks do that in which one knob or the other will become loose and not turn that side of the 'faucet' on or off properly. That would be a good thing to check first since you do have water at the sink.
