Hi,

I want to move to Los Angeles by next year to pursue an acting career. What kind of visa would I require? How long would this take? How long will it allow for me to live there before the visa expires?

Any information would be VERY appreciated. Thank you very much.

Moving to the US (as opposed to visiting the US) is difficult and very limited. You will need to check with the US Embassy in Canberra to be sure what status you can travel as. Most immigrant Visas to the US are sponsored Visa, like a family member sponsors your application, an employer sponsors your application, or you are investing in the US and the persons involved with your investment sponsor you. Otherwise immigrant visas are limited to to the diversity program, which is a lottery allowing a certain number of Aussies to move to the US every year.

They are very strict on allowing people to come here who are not financially supported. Therefore the idea of a person coming to the US try to get a job in acting, would probably not get you very far. You best advice (if you want to move to the US as an actor) is to get established as an actor in Australia and then have a production company sponsor you on an E-3 Visa. You could then apply for permanent residency once you are here.
