Do you have sponsorship for an immigrant Visa into the US?? That should determine where you live. Moving to the US is difficult under current immigration guidelines. The number of people allowed to immigrate to the US is regulated to sponsored immigrants (meaning you are sponsored by family, or an employer) or you may be admitted under the diversity visa program, but there is no guarantee of this. If you come in on a temporary visa, without a green card you will not be able to work here.
See your country's US Embassy website for information on Immigration. http://abuja.usembassy.gov/

After that the cheapest places to live are generally in the Southern and Southwestern US. Parts of the Southern US , though the people are generally friendly, are not partial to immigrants. The major cities are different though.

I think the best US city for an immigrant to move is San Antonio, or another major city in Texas.

San Antonio is a large city with a large immigrant population, and a culturally diverse population. The cost of living is low of moderate (depending on where you live in the city) the climate is temperate, and there is a lot to do in the city.

San Antonio is one of thee US fastest growing cities and is currently the 7th largest in the US. There is relatively low unemployment. And very friendly people.
