I wonder what is your personal definition of the word "emo"

There are two types of emo. There's real emo (as described by Hairspray Queen) and there's the plastic emo you see on MTV which, as the bands will tell you themselves, isn't really emo at all, but it's fans still refer to themselves as "emos" for some nonsensical reason.

In REAL terms, it SHOULD mean a specific subgenre born in the 1980s where the singers would get emotional (i.e. sometimes the singers cried) onstage. "Emotional" punk shortened down to emo. Examples include Sunny Day Real Estate, Rites of Spring, and the Promise Ring.

Some current music bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, and Dashboard Confessional are referred to by fans as "emo". Many of the old school fans take offense to that.

It comes down to being an unwinnable musical argument much like the people who argue about whether Pink Floyd is better in the Syd Barrett era or the Roger Waters era. There will NEVER be a definitive who is or is NOT emo answer. There's decent concensus on older bands (even there is some argument...many toss Minor Threat in there but a lot of Minor Threat fans get ticked off at that) but almost NO agreement on whether there are any current "emo" punk bands or not.

Most of the time you hear "emo" though it's from some "punkier than thou" type trying to put down a band they don't like by referring to it as 'emo' usually followed by a crack about shopping at Hot Topic.

I'm amazed that people can't recognize that IS possible to like the older emo bands AND MCR at the same time. It IS possible, folks...

i asked this question last week :)

my definiton of emo, is a generally right definition.
people will tell you "cutting, black clothes, girl jeans, crying etc"
but that's not emo... that's fashion.

emo *was* a small underground scene started by a band called Rites of Spring in washington dc in the late 80's. it continued into the 90's with bands like Saves the day, Texas is the reason, fugazi, bright eyes, sunny day real estate... it was just a subgenre off of punk, it sounded sort of like punk but with more emotional lyrics and motives instead of political stuff or whatever punk was about.

now. it's a fashion trend/stereotype/annoying genre of music.

I see marriage as a religious belief that is between a man and a woman, of any race. However, if a gay or lesbian couple want a civil union, that will be legally seen as a marriage, then I'm all for that. That should also be extended to anyone, gay or straight, who wants to be "married" but does not want the religious aspect.

It's short for emotional.

I don't have a personal definition of emo...I don't want to be a stereotype.

Are you referring to a musical subgenre? Because if you are, emo would be defines as a kind of music usually played or performed with lots of emotion on the singer's part. This would mean lots of facial expressions, hand gestures & stage theatrics. The band (as in today's case) wears black clothes, black eyelines & black nail polish.

i think emo means fag.

well, whiney little brats who feel sorry for themselves because they had it so hard growing up in the suburbs. so in return they cry themselves to sleep, wear eyeliner (the guys), wear womens pants (the guys), and try to appear unique. but the funny thing is; they aren't being unique since they are all the same.

but seriously, i think if you look it up in the webster dictionary it translates into "******".
