Here in Wales in primary school we learn Welsh.
And all the way through high school we have to learn Welsh, French up to age 15 and have a choice of German.

In the USA, students are only taught English. Once a student reaches high school, typically around the age of 14, they can begin taking a foreign language, typically Spanish or French. I took German in high school. Larger schools may offer Latin, Chinese, or other languages.

But changes are being made slowly but surely. Our education system is finally understanding that younger children learn langauges more easily the younger they are. So Spanish is now being offered to young children in many places.

Then there's the issue of immigration in the USA and all the young children who do not speak English when they start going to school. We have programs in place to help them learn English at a fast pace. However, studies have shown that when children are fluent in their 1st language, they can become fluent in English much more quickly. So another trend is to teach students in both their 1st language and in English - this is called bilingual education. There are many models for this type of langauge education.

This was probably more information than you wanted, right?
