static can ruin microchips

the same static you get after dragging your feed on a carpet and touching something and it goes pop and sometimes shocks you

antistatic wrist straps are used when working with microchips it grounds the static charge to keep it from damaging the chip

The wriststrap has a piece of metal in contact with the skin. It is usually attached to an elastic band which keeps it in contact with the skin. t is connected to a ground through a wire with a high resistance so that the static charge is drained off more slowly. It may be connected to the chassis of the equipment you are working on. the idea is to have your body and the equipment at the same electrical potential. If you don't have one just be sure to touch the case of the computer before working inside. A company called Desco,www.desco.com has a great deal of info.
You can buy a cheap wriststrap at Radio Shack.
I routinely work on computers without one just be careful to drain off any static before hand.

I am not sure what your problem is or who gave you advice, but it sounds like they are idiots.

An antistatic wrist wrap is simply a conductor you wrap around your wrist and then connect electrically to the chasis or earth point of the computer. This ensures that when you handle components you will not have a static charge on your hands that can discharge to them.

However:

1: products such as memory that are designed to be user installed have antistatic protection within them
2: it sounds unlikely that you are unsoldering main CPU components which is when they would be important
3: they are of no value or use at all in every day use because the computer case is sealed, the components are earthed and any way you ahve no way to access the chassis.

computer circuits are composed of IC's and other electronic devices. These are the electronic devices that are static sensitive. You may never know that by just touching it you already damaged your computer circuits. we develop static as we move or as we do something. By using wristwrap, static are transfered to it just before it was transfered to computer circuits.
