I think I agree with many of the responders - the emphasis is not on the music / lyrics . . . it's on the money to be made, and if we copy and regurgitate that which is popular (frankly, the masses are asses) and run with the 'formula music' so prevalent in boy bands/american idol/top 40/etc, well we're deadening ourselves.

I don't know why folks are so hung up on sub-genres, other than it gives "those who must label" something to do.

Personally, the music I enjoy is often a mix of genres/styles and don't rely on 'genre labels'

I say to musicians and artists out there - be original

Well, we would have missed some really cool tunes. I guess at the time in the early 50s rock and roll caused the 'rebelliousness towards parental discipline and control and authority'. This lead to the 60s counterculture. Eventually leading to disco etc. Hip Hop evolved from early rock and roll which was predicated on jazz. I'm thinking some other form of music like big bands may have had a longer life span but some other music would have developed. But, definitely - rock and roll had the 'bad thang' going. Without it, it is possible that the counterculture revolution of the late 60s would never have happened and perhaps not hip hop. I think it is possible the 70s disco/clubbing still could have went on because in the 40s there were dance clubs (ball rooms) etc.

I agree with alot of you guys. Everything sounds the same. This will change soon though. This is the way the modern music industry works. Someone will come out with something original, then, 500 other bands will copy that and millions of stupid *** 13 year olds will buy the cd and request it on the radio and trl and sh!t until someone comes out with something new for the 13 year olds to obsess over. So, I say, f^ck the mainstream and listen to Clutch. They are a metal/blues/southernrock kind of band. Google Clutch, but be forewarned, you WILL have your *** kicked in by how good this music is. Oh, and another band that probably only people in Hawaii know is Ekolu. The lead singer would put every american idol winner to shame. It is Hawiian roots music, which is prett much reggae. Check this out and start saving up for a trip to Hawaii.

Anyway.
You should check out Antic Cafe ((they're Japanese, mm'kay?)). Google them on Google Images or something. They have a pretty big fanbase, but I don't see why. Their vocalists sucks hard, and I... Just hate their music!

And I actually know a couple of bands that just formed because they want some smexxums ((If you cannot comprehend my 'usage' of my own langauge, I meant "sex")). It's sad. u_u

Today's rock isn't about the music but the "look"

The music sucks but if you dress the same as some kids, they'll go to the show.

Bah. I listen to The Beatles, Zeppelin, Dylan, Queen. They didn't care about their image, they always made the music come first.

they all sound the same; unlike in the 90s when you definitely identify the difference between subgenres of rock music. alot of great bands came out during that era and it would always be my fave period in music (apart from 80s that is)..

i haven't heard any new band that struck me as different.

it pretty much blows, the world of rock was best when you would hear bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and older Tool on the radio.

I don't know...
Before it was "drugs, sex & rock n roll" but now it seems that it lost it's touch for music. So it would be just "drugs & sex"
