Mel is right. It is what we used to call a buffer. They are used on just about any smooth finished floor but not on textured. Some floor finishes ( not all are wax ) require the higher speed machine to to obtain the desired gloss and harden the finish. Some are thermoplastic. The spinning pad actually generates heat which " shrinks" the floor finish. If yo have not used one before start in an open area away from walls, furniture and people. They can get away from you if not careful. The pad type that you use is determined by what type of finish you use.
