The first series of Dr Who is starting on BBC Prime tonight, is it worth watching? I was a huge fan as a kid, although the noise from the Tardis used to terrify me more than anything else! I live in Greece now and I know people back in the UK are raving about the new Dr Who How does it compare to the old one and is it as good as people say?

I am also from the Tom Baker era, I vauguely remember John Pertwee and didn't take to Colin Baker much.
The one starting tonight has Christopher Ecclescakes or whatever, but I'm going to watch it as I'm from cardiff and believe they filmed a lot of it there.
Thanks for the answers folks, we don't get much decent stuff on BBC Prime apart from Hustle which is probably the best UK series I have seen in years and Eastenders (if you see the Greek soaps, Eastenders is oscar material in comparison!!)

we are entering the third series here in the UK
my kids love it.....
the graphics are out of this world
the wit given to the doctor is great
and as you on the first one there what do you think of billy piper as rose Tyler?
the first one is great being attacked by a wheelie bin (trash/rubbish bin)
it ain't as frightening as when you were a kid lol
well not for you but maybe the kids
they have imagination still
peter eccleson was great
but David tenant is the doctor now
as peter didn't want to be stuck as being known as the doctor for ever and left

I absolutely enjoy watching Dr. Who. It has been my favorite television show since I was a kid as well. I use to stay up all night watching the old series on Sunday's starting at 11:00 p.m. I was totally sad when the final episode came up with Sylvester McCoy as the Dr. Who. As the years went by, a movie came out in 1996 officially ending the character of Sylvester McCoy with the regeneration of Paul McGann who was the Doctor. This movie only appeared on television during that time. The writers never displayed Paul McGann regenerating at all. When I heard that a NEW series was coming out I was totally thrilled. I couldn't believe the series was coming back and the New Doctor Who's have been fantastic. I've enjoyed watching Christopher Eccleston and now David Tennant is taking the helm and he's doing a splendid job. I like Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. The writing is totally fantastic and unique for this wonderful series. I can't say that the old series is better than the new because they both are great. I love ALL the Doctor Who's their really cool.

I was never allowed to watch the old ones and never bothered with the one with the McGann brother.
I was baby sitting for an older child who had been told it was bed after Doctor Who. So I'm sitting watching this episode with David Tennant and the Martha Jones character (cannot remember the actress' name) and I'm totally engrossed.
Since then I've gone back and seen all of the Christopher Eccleston ones and all of the David Tennant ones.
Definitely worth a chance.

I also liked the old Dr. Who, I haven't seen the new series yet,I'm not really interested to see it but if the series was filmed in Cardiff then it would be worth watching just so that you don't feel so homesick!!

I hate to admit it Nicky, but I've become an avid watcher of the new Dr Who. My kids come most weekends and the teenagers are big fans, I sit and watch it with them. When I was a young boy the Cybermen used to make me hide behind the sofa!!!!
David Tennant is excellent as the Dr, probably my favourite.

Oh it's absolutely brilliant and you will love it - much better than the old ones! Christopher Ecclestone is very good as is Billie Piper, although she leaves after the second series. PS my daughter lives in Greece - Athens!

i'm irish so i cant really comment on the "yuks" (yousuns from the uk) on how they feel about the new doctor ?. but i like david tennant, hes quirky abstract and sincere all at the same time. as for does it compare? hmm its all about presence on screen, tom baker is doctor? as far as i care. but i'm a child of the 70's. you have to excuse me now, doctor? is on bravo i have to go hide behind the sofa.

i watch it because it is made and mostly filmed in wales
only problem is that after they filmed at where i work i am always looking to see where the set is .
I've spotted
the former British nylon spinners (ICI) Pontypool
the river usk Newport looking at the tech
parts of pill
ABP Newport ( Newport docks )
may be you will spot some of your old haunts
but other than that it is good

I think it's been getting better as time goes on.
But that still hasn't persuaded me to watch it.
My brother is totally OBSESSED with it and watches it non - stop.
And everything has to be related with doctor who, like if he sees a phone box, he thinks its a Tardis.

Don't miss it. Updated in approach and considerably less childish. Certainly at first it was brilliant to have it back; three series in and my interest lessened a tad, but it still is entertaining and, at times, very impressive in scope.
