It was not a huge hit when it was first released. That's because it was too long to get airplay on AM stations and editing it down to the three-minute format that was common at the time would have ruined the song. Instead, it became popular on album-oriented FM stations where there were no such limits. In those days, radio stations weren't automated like they often are today and one way I could tell that the DJ probably was taking a bathroom break was if that song was put on and played in its entirety.

Usually rock radio stations will have an 'end of year' countdown where they play all the most requested songs of the year in order. The top 3 vary from year to year. But they are always:

Stairway To Heaven - Led Zepp
Freebird - Skynyrd
Hotel California - The Eagles

Usually Stairway wins the top spot with the other 2 flip flopping each year.

And Freebird is THE best song to listen to in a truck!!! It just jams so much better than in a car.

It is considered the greatest jam in rock history! Even today no matter what band is playing, you still hear calls for Freebird at final encore time. I was lucky enough to see the original band four times before the plane crash - including a couple of the concerts they show in "Freebird- The Movie".

I signed a petition once to have our National Anthem changed to "Freebird".
