There are a lot of people asking asking questions relating to film music, as well as other genres of music, that is in no way related to CLASSICAL MUSIC! I'm not quite sure if this stems from ignorance, or there is another explanation, but I am kind of getting annoyed. To all of you who have questions not relating to classical music, please go elsewhere with your inquiry.
Thank you,
Steve

LOL! I was expecting some harsh responses...but so quickly?? I am in no way angry. I am simply wondering why people would feel compelled to ask a question in a section designated for something else, when they can receive better help elsewhere. Instead of reacting so quickly with anger, perhaps you should take a moment and ponder the issue at hand.

Thank you, dream! Something tells me that some of the answerers didn't come upon this question browsing the classical music section.

rain...I'm confused. what do you mean you were checking in on me??

I just had a realization. Most of you do not look in the classical section (I checked your posts). So, I ask myself, "How did they come across this question"? Something tells me that some of you searched the word stupid. Just wondering what compelled you to do so??lol

botticellilady...actually, it is under classical...do your research!

Thank you for all of your responses! I would like to address some of your comments.
fredrick z - If you read my post a little more clearly, you would have realized that I was only addressing those film scores that are IN NO WAY RELATED TO CLASSICAL MUSIC! Regarding the drawing of lines...whenever that is done, there are going to be those who question the placement of certain items that are close to that line on both sides, and this is understandable. Lines drawn, are a must, despite their imperfections.
mira- I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of the relationship between a past response of mine, and the question at hand. I never accused anyone of being stupid. I simply asked if they are stupid/ignorant, or is it perhaps something else. Furthermore, you say that I am sending away potential classical music fans...I disagree. Those who would be detered due to my post, are in my opinion definitely NOT potential classical music enthusiasts.

toutvas - YES!!! This is the most fun I've had on yahoo answers, in a long time!
bearcat - thank you! I do agree...I could have used more tact. That being said, I stick to my original question. I think I have received the answer indirectly, which is, yes, people are that stupid...not everyone of course, just many.
NOT YOU!!:)
glinzek - as always, your opinion is going to be important to me. However, as I stated earlier, I was in no way referring to anything that is even somewhat related to classical music. I was addressing those who ask questions that are in no way related to classical music.

Thank you all, it was fun...
I wish so much enthusiasm and interest was paidto the more imortant questions...

Whoa Steve -- You really put your foot in a pile of cow flop. Perhap you could have phrased your q alittle more delicately?
I kind of like having discussions about the relative merits of John Williams and Elmer Bernstein vs. the legit composers -- It gets some folks thinking. Isn't that why we're here?

Steve, I agree with you to the extent that there do appear from time to time questions which do not fit in this venue. I think what has raised ire of those answering you is not so much your message as the manner in which it is stated. Any time you use words like "stupid" and "ignorance" you are probably going to irritate and lose your audience.

Your best bet is just to ignore the misplaced ones or give an answer that gently guides them to a forum which can better answer their inquiry.

And a word to Dream: Unfortunately the term "classical music" has become generic and to the general public at least includes all of the art music from medieval to contemporary. The chance that this perception is ever going to change is probably slim to nil. On this forum you sometimes have to interpret if the question is about classical music or "classical music."

Musician, composer, teacher.

I'm just frustrated that this is called "Classical Music". This section certainly isn't answering questions only about music composed circa 1650-1750. I am just annoyed that Classical music to the ignorant can go from Gregorian Chant from 500CE to Schoenberg, Stravinsky(Yes I realise he did go through a Neoclassic phase), Takemitsu, and Glass (Contemporary). If you are actually talking about music from 1650-1750ish, call it the Common Practise Period for goodness sake. Or don't be so lazy and learn the generic names:

Medieval - very early gregorian chant-1400s (although there are lots of transitory stuff in between)
Renaissance - 1400-early 1600s
Baroque - 1650-1750 (ish... maybe even 1700)
Classical - 1700/1750-1850...ish
Romantic 1800s-late 19th century
20th century - self explanatory.

Yes I realise that these times are general only and that no one actually decided to change styles because the date ran out.

Oh and Steve don't worry about the other people. It's a perfectly reasonable question.

...Edit:

Yeah...see I study music at Uni and it's just soooo annoying when people are ignorant. I mean I've seen questions about techno in this particular forum b4. Dunno why everyone else got all aggressive at this one though...I've seen some terrible terrible truly terrible questions in some other sections.

This is a very pedantic question. The boundaries between different kinds of music are not set in stone. Much film music has been used as a base for serious classical (in the broad sense) music and vice versa. Same with jazz and pop..

Stop being such a elitist tightwad. Were you hoping to impress the women with your extensive knowledge of what is and isn't classical music? Since you want to nitpick, would you go somewhere else with your gripe? This is Yahoo! Answers, not Yahoo! Complaint Dept.

Actually, Dream, the question was a bit off base. The question was actually "Are people that stupid?" I can understand the frustration, but why insult people? Because you're "intellectual"? What a crock.

Edit:
I found your question because I was in MUSIC. Classical is a type of MUSIC, so it popped up. I didn't have to search for stupid, I read your "question" and there it was.

Dear Steve,

You wrote this: "You accuse her of being arrogant, however, it is you who is arrogant. " Do you remember where? I was so sad to read your lines above, after reading your answer on the other topic from which I quoted that sentence.
Please don't send people away from here. How will they get to like classical music if we persecute them for asking us, even if their questions doesn't belong strictly to our profession?
We don't need to read and answer every question, asked here. Just ignore those ones, you don't like.
I hope I wasn't too hurtful with this.
Bests for you,

mira

So, let me get this straight. According to you, Prokofiev's symphonies and concerti should be discussed here but not his Peter and the Wolf or Alexander Nevsky because they started life as film scores?

The lines you draw are completely artificial.
