going on name recognition and charts I would say..... Foo Fighters , Korn , Linkin Park , Velvet Revolver, and a tie between Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, and Hinder....not neccessarily my opion but I do like them all

By "right now", you mean mainstream, I'd say:
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Great people in respective positions. Band that plays funk rock and alternative rock.
2. Rage Against The Machine. Again, great people in respective positions, although the lead vocalist is a rapper. Funk metal and alternative metal.
3. The White Stripes. An alternative rock duo. The guitarist is as good as the guitarists in the other two, while the drummer isn't bad. No bass though. Alternative rock and indie rock, with maybe a hint of garage rock.
4. Muse. A good band in general. Good guitarist, nice bassist, and average drummer. Sounds a bit like Radiohead, but still is pretty original. Alternative rock.
5. U2. After all these years they're still good and selling millions of albums worldwide. A "less is more" type of group. Alternative rock with hints of dance music.
