When DNA is taken from a sex offender, do they check for any types of STD's? If so what types are they checked for? Would herpes be one of them? Please let me know if anyone has any ideas.

There is no federal mandate and not via the DNA testing phase. DNA is used to introduce evidence of criminal responsibility in court for conviction.

Statutes vary by State (and are overwhelmingly post-conviction). Victims are encouraged to have tests and re-tests (for those diseases with known incubation periods).

In Ohio, upon the request of the prosecutor or victim, the law enforcement agency or court with authority will require the alleged offender to be examined for sexually transmitted diseases. [ORC 2907.27]

The process of extracting DNA from both sex offenders and violent offenders are the same. A finger prick is done and the blood is placed on a "blotter card". The only information that is either relevant, or legally permissable is the offender's DNA genetic data. Absolutely no STD information is able to be provided from this process.

Generally, no -- because it's usually too expensive.

Remember, "sex offender" is an incredibly broad category of crimes -- and includes everything from rape and child molestation all the way down to slapping someone on the butt or skinnydipping in a public place.
