Derr, was she at a UAW union represented GM facility? Since sometime back in the late 30's , when the UAW was first getting organized across the USA one of the first things in the National / Local Agreement. Everyone who has worked for Ford and Chrysler too knows an 89'r is a temporary employee. It takes 90 days to become "permanent" according to para. 57 of the National Agreement where by`an employee may become "permanent' after serving a 90 day probationary period within a 6 mo. period . In other words any one hired in as an 89 day temporary emp. will be laid off after 89 days . Local agreements can allow for hiring of temps for 120 days. A lot of seniority workers and 'Company employees' would tell a "temp" if ya worked hard and didn't miss any work the 'Company would hire ya on as a "permanen"t emp. Not so, cause she was told up front she would be employed for 89 days and then "Laid off".In 1984 the International Union arranged "transfer agreements" under para. 96 of the International Agreement for employees of a closed plant who's jobs are transferred to another locatrion may go to the new location and retain their seniority by transferring to that plant and that location / plant may not hire anyone permanently for job placement till all displaced employees have exhausted their transfer rights . Under some local agreements she could have been employed for up to 6 mo.and then laid off. No one changed the rules as the 'rules were written in stone;' before any one reading this was born(maybe). Now if she worked at an IUE or Steelworkers' repersented union which GM has at some locations I can't say what their agreement says but I underrstand it falls in line with the United Autoworkers Union agreement. I have a question for you and your girlfriend ( actually it;s just for her since she worked at GM) Did you / she get a copy of the National Agreement and Local Agreement? Did you / she read what 89 days got you? I am sure when you / she hired in for 89 days she was told it was temporary cause like I said since para. 57 was enacted in the early yrs of the GM / Ford / Chrysler back in the late 1930's this was what temporary employees were referred as ( along with the trm summer help). And with GM shutting down an additional 11 plants the only way a UAW represented plant can hire a "new person" is if "NO ONE WILL TRANSFER THERE!!!!! But if no one wants to go to a location outside there "area hire if they turn it down ,in essence "They are Fired"!( may as well be cause they go to the bottom of the list). And GM / Ford / Chrysler cannot hire anyone full time if they have any body in a jobs bank where by their plant is either shut down or production is cut back and GM ./ Ford / Chrysler has employees laid off due to a plant closing. Seniority at GM is "across the board, nation wide, and as long as anyone is "laid off due to a plant closing is entitled to the "job opening"
before anyone can be hired off the street"!

Faithful If you haven't heard the latest about GM then you need a brief education.GM is in the lower top end of the car rankings. To begin with most GM car engines and transmissions have gone to japanese powerplants,as evident in the pontiac car lines.Oldsmobile has been gone since 2004 as the last plant closed down up in yipsilante michigan. So what makes you think that GM is alive and well these days and a good company to work for?Today its japanese german or korean in anything in cars and trucks and vans.Go figure.
