True loneliness is the feeling received when you have no friends, not even your "self" as a friend. Doubt and isolation permeate your entire awareness affecting your personal and public life and can develop, over time, into an inferiority complex. This is to be avoided, so try to recognize it asap.

If you believe in God, it feels as if He has left you, abandoned you.
-----------------
My own experience has taught me that strong emotions like "loneliness" are NOT to be trusted. Self-generated emotions like this do NOT have much value over the long-term, and should be responded to by going out with somebody you DO trust and just spending time with them. The conversation will "drift" around, and if you don't force the conversational topics, things will "emerge" which will shed light on your present situation....

Lastly, YOU must learn to become your OWN best friend. That way, you'll never be lonely - and that comes from self-knowledge, and self-knowledge comes from experience, and experience (usually) comes with all the ups and downs of simply living a full life.
--------------
I kicked the "loneliness" habit after 33-34 or so. I just simply got tired of it. It's boring - really, really boring - and is likely one of those human emotions that says, "Get a LIFE - Go get laid with somebody you can truly, honestly love as the person you are AND as you want to be loved!!!"

(Lastly, the love-from-God thing suffices some people, but never worked for me, and regard it as an institutional denial of the trust that should be devoted towards other human beings.)

True loneliness is when no matter how many people are around, you still feel empty inside. You can be alone or with people and yet long for a friend. It permeates the soul and holds happiness captive.

Drinking or drugging oneself to death. One is as alone in a crowd as with loved ones, and has no place to go except into the bottle. Which leads farther and farther away from self and others, and eventually to the grave. That's true loneliness.

My true loneliness was after my husband passed away after being married for many years. He was my best friend my everything. All my friends and family couldn't fill the void that was left after he passed, it took me two years to get over it. Still long to see his face again and share the times we had together.

Benjamin Franklin defined it as, "The person on a rainy day- with no friends, no place to go- who doesn't know how to read". That sounds about right- to me. :)
