I think it is more the fear of rejection from others that stops people from saying what they make.
I know people would laugh at what I make. And that makes me want to keep it to myself.
Yeah, I mean sure you can think that it's no ones business and it shouldn't matter, but it's because you don't want to get rejected.

It's not fear, it's just that it's none of the other person's business. How much money you earn is nothing to judge a person by, and therefore shouldn't matter at all. The person being asked may live up to this and sometimes asking someone their salary can be considered quite rude- especially if you don't know the person very well.

One girl, on the same rung of the company ladder as I was, mentioned her salary to me. It was 3 times as much as I was making. Made me feel jealous and angry.
The girl told me she was paid more because she knew more than I did. That made me angry, too. She did know a bit more about the job, but we both worked equally as hard. Because I was old enough to be her mother, I knew more about life than she did.
I asked the supervisor why Julie made so much money, and I didn't. Supervisor's reaction was to write Julie up for allowing me to know how much she made.

Because they don't want to be judged by others as making too little money or more than their friends do. If it's at work, it may be against policy.

It's to prevent somebody else from trying to get the person's job. Somebody can claim they can do that job cheaper and better.

Differences is wages/wealth can create awkward social situations. So people just don't talk about it, at least in the protestant western world.

I'm self employed and I make approximately $700-850k per year depending on how much I work and my expenses. That is not a typo.
