& if you don't report it, then you're an accessory to a crime & can go to jail, too. That's pretty bad. Like you can't win either way. I guess you're better off trying your best to not be around a crime.

Witnesses to a crime NEED to do the right thing!Failure to report a crime just leaves the criminal free to commit another. Who knows, the next one might be against a friend or relative of yours. There is a percentage of the culture that labels people as snitches. These are cowards! If you allow yourself to be intimidated into not testifying or not reporting a crime, you are a coward too!!!The only way, in a free society, to have law and order, is for citizens to stand up against the criminals. The other option is anarchy!

It *is* generally a good idea to avoid the area of crimes, whenever possible :-)

The reason people say you're "setting yourself up to be murdered" is because a really desperate criminal might try to kill you to prevent you from testifying at his trial. This is unlikely unless it's a *really* competent, powerful criminal (like in the mob) but still a threat. However, you're right that not reporting the crime is a problem too. It doesn't necessarily make you an "accessory," but it means you're allowing more crime to flourish in your neighborhood, and so can't complain when the crime does, indeed, flourish.

Not always true in either direction.

Some crimes, if you report against very dangerous people, you very well might be at risk -- there are always a few who are willing to kill to remain out of jail -- but usually very few.

Also, not all people who refuse to report risk being an accessory -- to be an accessory, you must help in some way -- either before/during the crime, or helping to cover it up.

Simply failing to report (with very few exceptions) is not a crime.

I guess they think that the criminal will kill you for reporting them so you wont testify against them, but you can always report them annoymisly.
