Well, ya never no. Smooth Jazz has lost favor among broadcasters. The audience levels weren't enough to justify dedicating an entire FM frequency to the format in a large market. Add the fact that the format requires a very low commercial load to make it work, and certain advertisers didn't "fit" the format (loud car dealers, rock concerts, etc) and it was a very hard sell.
My consulting company actually used to specialize in Smooth Jazz, but we eventually lost all the clients we had in that format because they couldn't afford to promote and advertise.
Certain Smooth Jazz stations (in major markets) will probably always be around (WNUA, Chicago; WVMV, Detroit; KHJZ, Houston; KKSF, San Fran etc) because they are big money makers and are very well programmed. But Boston - forget it, who knew?
But your guess is as good a mine as far as Portland is concerned. It's possible that Entercom or Salem might switch one of theirs, or perhaps if they get their act together on HD you'll most certainly get a Smooth Jazz station again. But you'll have to go buy a new radio.
Nothing in life is simple, keep in mind the business mindset is, "We've got this frequency, what will make the most money?"

Clear Channel doesn't give a rip about any "local" audience. To the corporation it's either make the profit line or get dumped. Clear Channel didn't want to put any marketing into KIJZ because it was just a place holder until THEY decided what the Portland market "wanted" to hear. Now it's just another "Adult Contemporary -Oldies" sound, which brings in the profit margin, which is all they care about. Oh sure, they're running Smooth Jazz on their HD 2 channel, but that's only until people by more HD radios, then they'll dump it from there. So far as I'm concerned I would like to see a boycott of all such corporate broadcast entities like Clear Channel, but the "sheeple" will continue to be happy being led by the nose.

After KIJZ was replaced by a "60's & 70's" format, I was overjoyed when KKJZ came on the air! Yay! Smooth jazz on the air again!!!
The most disappointing thing about this latest change is there was absolutely no warning. I listened to KKJZ on my way to work in the morning, then on my way home it's suddenly a different format. Oh joy, another "greatest hits" station. We only have at least two others already here in Portland. I am extremely disappointed!
Clear Channel sure doesn't care about the listeners, just their bottom line.

My husband and I were so terribly disappointed and shocked when like usual we tuned our car radio to 105.9 to here our most favourite music and IT WAS GONE!!! I'm so mad and apart of my morning, day and evening are not the same and very much lacking in our entertainment now. I'm going to have to go buy Cd's of all the great musicians now. That's going to cost me a fortune.
I called the station this morning to ask if it will be back on somewhere else, and was told there just wasn't a large enough market for it. Well, my gosh, we can't be compared to the masses back east and the larger cities like LA and Huston and I'm sure Seattle is pushing it.
It always comes to the dollar!!
So so sad for this loss.

KIJZ 105.9 was the same station as in Los Angeles 94.7 The Wave which has been broadcasting for about 20 years now. They tried to do the same here in Portland, same hosts, same music same format. Too bad it didn't make it I was getting used to it. I guess they couldn't sell the same kind of advertising here in the northwest.

I don't think so. But we can certainly petition KMHD to air smooth jazz, or better yet, build a sister station playing the aforementioned format. If it can indeed go through, we'll have smooth jazz AND no commercial. How nice is that?
Their email is station_manager@kmhd.fm

Thanks for all of the e-mails. I was wondering what happened to Soft Jazz.
Played it in my store. Felt it had the right sound for customers. Now my radio is turned off.
If this station is an example of what has happened around the nation to other stations that play for an specific or older group of people, the sounds of soft jazz will be silenced.
