If they are in need, then I want to protect them. If they are down and out, I want to protect them. If they are hurting, in any way, I want to protect them. If they are needing comfort, I want to protect them.

What makes me want to protect someone is the fear that if I don't, something terrible will happen to them. I'm kinda doing that now with some of my friends. Some i have to even protect from themselves and encourage them to look at a situation differently so they don't hurt themselves!
What makes me want to protect someone? The thought of loosing them if I don't.

Love - When you care about someone you want to protect them.
But sometimes we see friends loving others without care and we worry that they'll be hurt
Can't worry mate - just be there for them when/if they fall.

protect can also be a Motherly instinct.
But basically you protect whom you love and also whom you consider weak, and in need of some sort of protection.
