Are Americans aware that Mexican trucking companies and drivers will soon be taking over the roads?

Earlier this year, Congress ordered the Department of Transportation to launch a pilot program to study whether opening the U.S.-Mexico border to all trucks could be done safely.

The Teamsters and Sierra Club argued in their court papers the program proposed by the administration won't yield statistically valid results and the public wasn't given ample opportunity to comment.

"This is just more deceit from the Bush administration," said Teamsters President Jim Hoffa, who said he was skeptical of administration claims that Mexican truck drivers will be tested for drug and alcohol use.

"How can that be when there are no drug testing labs in Mexico?" Hoffa asked.

This is not about illegal immigrants. This is about Mexicans paid by Mexican trucking companies. The drivers pay taxes to the Mexican government. They aren't moving here, they don't have to.

Maybe they'll get it when they lose their own jobs.

Yes, at least I am, and I don't like it. An intermediary point to drop off trailers from Mexico, with pick up by American drivers would be a much better idea. I believe that the root of all of this is globalization. While that might sound like a good idea to those who think they are smarter than, and more important than the rank and file of Americans, I think they are nuts. No Mexican trucks should roll into America unless they have met the most stringent application of safe guards against those who can't speak English, and have no training in our highway laws, and health/sobriety laws. It should the extreme few that get past our borders, with most just dropping off their load at a transfer yard. With that in mind, a full search of the trailers should be done, at the expense of the company that sent the trailer to that transfer yard, for drugs, nuclear materials, or anything else that we would not want coming into our country.

I hope not. As far as I am concerned any American truck driver who opens fire on a Mexican truck and driver is scum. This is an issues to be settled at the governmental level. The Mexican truck drivers are just doing their jobs.

I completely agree about the trucking issue. My husband is a truck driver and his company just lost a huge account to Mexico. That cut just lost him his job. Oh, sure, he could just go somewhere else and find another trucking job but, when will that one be taken away too? Mexicans do not have to follow DOT guidelines and their licenses are handed out like candy! My husband saw five of them piling into a truck last month (and yes, they have been running our roadways for a while now), and with only a wooden box for a seat, no seatbelt and no wipers. Whichever one was driving, couldn't even see clearly to drive!

These Mexicans have been stealing our U.S. trucking jobs for the past few years and now...looks like we'd better run for the hills, as far as safety!!!

Yes, there are the minority of truck drivers out there, Jimbo, who are bad drivers just as there are four wheel drivers that love road rage and who think that truck drivers are a nuisance and should get out of their way! What most fail to consider is this important fact...If it weren't for those hard working truck drivers, your precious little commodities in all the stores, would not be there! So, the next time you cry about those big, bad ole stupid truck drivers...just pull over and let them through! You, Jimbo, don't think this will affect you??? Are you kidding me??? How stupid are you??? Without them, this country's economy would collapse. Are you going to be the one to handle that big piece of machinery from point A to point B? Do you think you could handle it? They have enough riding their backs without your whining added!

DOT's guidelines for our truck drivers today are extremely strict and leave little room for any human error!!! Not to mention they are constantly bombarded by their companies to ignore those rules to move the freight faster and faster! Otherwise, they are fired. That's why some companies want Mexican drivers. They can break those rules and get away with it!

I think it's about time for Americans to give our truck drivers a break! Not only are they pushed to the max but, now they are losing their jobs to Mexicans who will run for less pay, break all the rules, steal their jobs and not think one thing about road safety! Do you think they will care about the loads they are carrying? Do you think they will take the time to make sure the load is loaded properly? Will they care if the shipment is destroyed by the time it gets there? Do you think they will care about your children in the back seat??? Watch out Americans, here they come. And for all those who complain about our guys...guess you have a shock coming to you!

BTW...I called our Senator yesterday at 4:30p.m. CST. I only got a recording but, I left a good long message about this big, big problem, with my name and number if he has any questions!!! You should call too! This can still be stopped, if enough of us state our outrage!

yeah, my $50,000 a year job is soon to become another one of those "jobs Americans don't want to do."
The republicans lost my vote. I will be looking for a third party from here on out. If Hillary wins, so be it.

this might be a common misconception but goods arrived from Mexico loooooong before this deal came up...

the sun will rise tomorrow...and there is probably a small chance that it will even set if the truckers are coming in.

They pretty much do that already. My DC gets deliveries from Mexico all the time and they're almost all mexican drivers.
