First - to learn from mistakes - human rights, communism (works in theory based on pre-modern society, but not in practice), etc
Second - learn from success - US founding fathers looked to the history of Rome and Greece to help plan the new American Republic
Three - expands our personal knowledge of the world - therfore making us appreciate the things around us more - from ancient buildings, institutions, culture, and subtlties of inter-cultural contact (i.e. - to know WHY race relations are the way they are).
Four - For inspiration from old tales - hollywood does this all the time. There are some good stories that we couldnt have made up if they hadnt happened - 300, Ceasar, WWII, etc (i dont mean the situation was good, just stories from them)
Five - to know more about our beliefs and cultures - the bible, koran, and others for example - becomes more relevant if put into the perspective of history.

And Six - better than having to take another math class!

It shows us of the past mistakes that we have made so that we do not do them again. We want to remember what has happened to us and what we have done to people, the hurt and corruption that has become because of our selfish ways, when we are thinking of things that we think will help us by killing just "a couple thousand" people all the benefits that we could receive because of it, we can read a history book and see what we put people through when we did that before.
Although war can solve some severe problems, it has extremely harsh consequences not only for the side that loses but for us too and the pain that we inflict on others can come back to haunt us in many years to come.
We look back on history to see that the wrongs we have done we will hopefully never forget and that the children we have will know of them and see the effect of them.

There is the old cliche', those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It is true, those that do not learn history make the same mistakes as others have made in the past. Would you rather learn the easy way, from others who have gone before you or the hard way by doing it all yourself? Do you really have to put your finger into a fire to find out it is hot and will burn you? Or will you learn from others who have put their finger into a fire and got burned?

Basically, so not to make the same mistakes of the past. If Adolf Hitler had of learned from history, he wouldn`t of got into a rush to take Russia, but by so doing, he made the same mistakes Napolean Bonaparte made, and that started his decline.

History are our roots, we have to know where we come from, to know where we're going, do you understand that?

"Lest we forget" is a saying coined by Sir Winston Churchill when the battle of Britain failed with the British landing in France, when England tried to fight the Germans by themselves in vain. He said he would return and Lest we forget those that gave so much for so many, on the beaches of Dunkirk when the brave English soldiers tried in vain to conquer the Germans and failed. Hundreds if not thousands were killed.

If we forget our history, it tends to lead us astray as to where our mistakes were and, how to correct them before we make them again.

Some people learn from the mistakes of others.....they are wise but few.
Some people learn from their own mistakes.......they are intelligent, but lucky to survive.
Some people never learn, they are the fools who perish.

History shows many examples of this.......... but who learns from it!
