Hi,
I just started college a week ago and i have no computer. To be more specific, no laptop.
I've stated earlier that i was in college so i think it is implied i am broke. =P

I have been going to different websites (bestbuy, circuit city, dell, sony, ect.) to try and finance a laptop. I have been denied at all of them except Best Buy which gave me a $200 limit, unfortunatley not enough to get a laptop for school.

It is a real problem for me because i have to use the university computers for writing papers and homework. If someone has any advice or help it would be very much appreciated.

P.S. Asking family for help is not an option =/

Have you asked your college if they have a program through any companies? I know mine has a deal with HP were they get a discount however I don't know if this is enough to get it down to what you need. Also do you really need a laptop? I don't think you will be able to get a notebook for that cheap unless its quite old, however you could build a desktop that would function for the basic web and office programs you would need.

When you do get a computer since you are low on money I would suggest Linux (if the laptop doesn't have an OS pre-installed) and OpenOffice ( instead of Microsoft Office).

Open Office is free and is a very good program that is Microsoft Office Compatible. Get it here... http://www.openoffice.org

try leasing one. It might help you in the time being. Its like $20 dollars a month or something like that, depending on what kind of computer you get. Might help to borrow a credit card to do this leasing thing. Or rent to own. Or maybe go to a pawn shop. You might get one for cheap. Dont need a strong one because colleges all run on T1 or something like that. So everybody is on the same level.

About all I can suggest is to get a job and save up for one. If you already have savings, dip into them and buy one - and if you don't have savings but have a job, put away some of what you make toward a computer. In the meantime, you'll have to use the university computers - I know it's a pain, but can be done.

Good luck.

try gateway they seem to be a little easier. Since you are going to finance the laptop I assume that you have a part time job, if this is the case you could also try going to Household financial and taking out a 1,000 personal loan, payment about 50 a month and it will help establish your credit
