The night in jail is the least of his problems -- and as far as sentences, that's actually much more than is likely warranted (assuming his actions were negligent and not malicious, as everyone claims).

The actual punishments are the effective end of his career -- years of being an attorney down the drain. Imagine never being able to continue in your profession anywhere and needing to start over with an entirely new career in your 40s or 50s...

While 1 day seems to be far to little a punishment for him, consider also that he will never work as a lawyer ever again. I would seriously doubt that any bar association would ever approve him for a license ever again. His professional career is ruined.
On the perhaps more evil side of my nature, 1 year, in common prison population might have been a better sentence. I'm sure that the other inmates would enjoy having him at their disposal for 1 year.

It was tragic, 1 day in jail seems lite but I read a story about it and the max sentence of thirty days wouldn't make anything better.
I just wish there would be more investigations and oversight of the 'going's on' in the region. I suspect this was not a huge exception in the activities in N.C.

It seems pretty pointless.
