Ok, I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 Liter Club Cab truck. It has 81,000 miles on it. It is also an automatic. For the past 1,000 miles or so, I've been able to feel a pretty strong kick when the automatic transmission shifts, like the truck kinda jerked a little or something when it shifted, but it still accelerated normal and felt completely normal except for that little jerk I felt when it shifted.

Also, whenever I would shift from Drive to Reverse, the truck would kinda jerk in the same manner, except I would be sitting still with the brakes on, so it would kinda jerk forward a little bit. Whenever I would back up somewhere, and then put it in park, once I let off the brakes, I could feel the truck roll back a little bit and jerk then too.

Now the problem is, it seems my truck is not like shifting at all, or it barely is, but something is really wrong. When I accelerate, everything will be fine up to 30 mph, but then it feels like I can't go any faster and it won't shift...

The engine will just make a loud humming noise like it does right before it is supposed to shift, but it won't. And also, it will only be at like 2500 rpm, thats it. It will just stay at like exactly 30 mph, and if I hold down the pedal, it won't shift or go any faster, but as soon as I let off the pedal and push right back down, like kinda pump it, it will jerk and shift and then go all the way up to 55 mph, but then the same thing happens- it won't go any faster, the rpm's are like 2500, but this time, no matter what I do, I can't get it to go over 55mph. And this big problem just started happening tonight.

For one last detail, my truck used to be able to accelerate really fast, but now it is going super slow.

What could be wrong? What would it take to fix this problem?

it sounds like your transmission is going out. check your transmission fluid. if it's low. put fluid in slowly while you have someone else put it from park, to reverse, to neutral, to overdrive, to drive, to 2, to 1. real slowly, and then bring it back real slow. keep doing that until you have the correct amount of transmission fluid on your dipstick. if that does not work, you will probably need a new transmission.

What you need to listen for is this. When the truck is placed into reverse does the engine change revs. When you shift from park to reverse or drive the engine idle should drop. If you don't hear the engine idle drop then the trans is either low on fluid or gone kaput as stated before. Check the fluid lever and see if its black in color or red, it should be red. One thing that can happen is the tranny may have water in it. This happened to me, my trans cooler in my radiator was leaking and putting fluid into the trans, which destroyed it. This caused the trans to lock up and the idle never changed from park to drive. If it was just the reverse gear bad it would still roll down the driveway, sounds like the rest of the tranny is about to go also.

Dodge seems to have problems with this
has it ever died when you move the gearshift from park to reverse/drive? if so find a mechanic quick
dont play back yard mechanic it is probably the torque converter.

could be a hue joint and depending on if it has a two piece drive shaft it could be the center support barring..or the slip yoke might need to be lubed that all I can say for now...or it could have a bad transmission mount ...better take it to my husband he's the one that knows all this stuff and a dealer is gonna cost alot...good luck

HAHHAHA

The "real kicker", is the fact that you paid a grip for that truck, and now it's worthless.... now you know why you should have bought a tundra...

Your tranny crapped out, and the motor will follow..... Dodge and Ford vehicles require mechanic's skills 'cause they break alot.... Chevy is a bit better, but not by much.....

in case you didn't know, GM is bankrupt about now.

have a dodge certified technician take a look at it. it could be the tansmission, it could be the trans pump, it could be the main line pressure, lots of stuff. dont fret, just open up your walet and be willing to spend around a hunderd dollars for diagnosis.
