I agree shalfat, but there are many things Egyptians take for granted like for instance following the order or the rules like putting on the seat belt or dont throw litter in the street or many things, you wont believe that i saw a shop selling a fake seat belt for cars to make it look like being placed on the driver so that he doesnt get booked!

Water, with out any doubt,is one thing that Egyptians appear to take for granted that there will always be an endless supply.
Australia has been going through a severe drought for a few years now. All states have imposed restrictions on water usage, some areas are worse hit than others. It seems strange to me, coming back here to what is in reality a desert region. That here we can wash our cars, hose down the streets, water the gardens and have more than 4 minute showers, knowing that the supply will always be renewed.
It is no wonder that the ancient Egyptians saw the Nile as a gift from the Gods.
I have found that the tradition of the extended and very caring family is something that is almost alien in western culture. At first I found it a little overwhelming and invasive.
Now I am used to it an take it as the norm. but I do wish that my mother in law could be convinced that I am not a staving waif and don't want to end up with a backside the size of a doorway. She is always wanting me to eat, eat and then eat somemore!
But I love her for it,as I know she means well.
I really appreciate your request for English answers only.
I am lucky as I have plenty of family and colleagues who will translate for me, but I do think it is unfair to post in Arabic on an English speaking site.It is also something that has slowly increased over the past few months.
If a persons English is poor then they should get a friend to help them post the question or answer.
But to post in Arabic is really a form of discrimination. Although I realise that 99% of the time there is no illintent meant.
Cheers!

edit: p.s. Adam, I hope that you notice I gave you a thumbs up!

The first question is difficult to answer, I dont believe that there is a thing that can be generalised that Egyptian will take for granted, mybe except that President will never change before he dies.

But things that Egyptians give more attention than normal, in the correct order:

- Football
- Education especially High School or "Thanawya 3amma"
- Religious topics, as it comes like "Hijab" these days for example
- Mrriage

Salaams dear :) In my humble opinion, I don't think you will be a sinner if you wouldn't forward them, yet if you find some or few which are impressive you might want to let others read them as well. the problem is that there are abundance of these mails , so if anyone is to forward them all he/she wont do any thing else !! Maybe the ones who send these mails mean well and have good intentions, but they don't have the right to impose the exact way they do on others to do the same, it is not logical nor Islamic. Yes, the call for goodness and reminding Muslims to repent and be better Muslims is our duty as a whole , BUT, every Muslim must be given the choice of how, and when to participate. We have to manage our own performance according to our circumstances. I'll tell you what I do, some times I do forward them; in case the mail is impressive or unique, sometimes I don't; when it is repeated or vague. Good question Duaa :) xoxo

The incredible and unique history of the country.
But I think that is pretty normal as it seems where ever we live in the world that seems to be the situation. We always know more about other countries than our own, as to us its something we live with and are used to so we are not so interested.
Egyptians care a lot about what others may think about their family. It seems really important to Egyptian people that family business is kept in the family and when someone visits everyone is on their very best behavior.
Family respect in the community is a very high priority for most of the Egyptians that I have had contact with.
Much more than people in England, America and other so called Western countries.

A generalisation for sure and a boring answer but a fact;

The environment, the Sky's of Cairo as so polluted as soon as you move abit out of Cairo its so good to breath. I know there is not a place on the planet that is not polluted but this issue has made average life expectancy in Egypt quite low compared to other places.

I know the answer is quite Cairo related rather than the rest of Egypt but not that much happens in Egypt that is not linked to Cairo and many peoples relatives from all over Egypt are staying in Cairo.

i think and don't take me for a pessimist , i believe that death is the only thing which should be taken for granted, because nothing and i mean nothing is sure as death , try to tell me something you are 100% sure of it in this life , nothing nulll zero nothing is sure but death i m not even sure i will stay alive long enough to post this message
egyptians gives more attention to appearance and what you look like more than how can you understand communicate and talk , only your car your flat your summer house , and you will see when you try to engage a girl in shallah

you know what?
i think that egyptians take nearly EVERYTHING for granted.
EHNA SHA3B "FAHLAWY".
if you ask anyone about anything,he'll give you a lecture.
even if he doesn't really know what it is.lots of people are like this.
and that's why lot of people describe medical prescriptions for other sick people as if they are physicians.

and also people take their HEALTHES for granted, and don't like doctors or visit them unless if they experience really severe symptomps or pain.
and that's why most egyptians don't have periodic medical check-up for their health.

sometimes they take granted of their religion, and use their a bit strange traditions that contradicts with religion.
i also agree with taking granted of the river nile.
fil hadeeth alnabawy:"anzal ALLAHO 3az wajal thalath anhar men aljanna alnilwadegla walforat".
and you see people through garbage and even dead animals in there..........ewwwwww.
also people take their history and nationalitism for granted, that you see lots of them now are trying to WESTERNIZE THEMSELVES.

and for the things that people give more attention is:
1-MARRIAGE:if a girl doesn't marry till a certain age so it's called...3anes.
what if she herself doesn't like to live her whole life beside a man?
or she doesn't like being responsible?
or doesn't like children?
or whatever?
it's her own life, and she has the rights to choose what she wants.
and the same also for the man who doesn't want to marry.
but his mother and family won't let him,and will look for brides everywhere.

2-FOOD:people give it more attention, and that's why egyptian kitchen have lots of tasty good food.
but most housewifes spend most of their time in the kitchen, and the other time thinking of what she'll do for tomorrow's food.
some live to eat.

my words may seem a bit pissimistic, but it's the truth.
but I ALSO HAVE TO SAY THAT NOT ALL EGYPTIANS ARE SO NEGATIVE AS WHAT I SAID.
there are people in here that give everything its right attention,NO LESS..NO MORE.
ans sorry for my long speech but it was long because i really liked your question :)

Asalam alaikum, I feel too many of them take being able to speak and read/write in Arabic. And they dont use enough of this ability in learning about Islam. Reverts like myself who have a really difficult time in Arabic would give almost anything to be able to study in Arabic....

Ok Im ready for the thumbs down, BUT toooo many Egyptians pay waaay too much attention to football matches. Many will stay up till sooo late to see it on t.v. but then u can almost hear the snoring over the athan for the Fajr prayer, subhanAllah. Islam IS the answer...salaams

definitely the Nile....the gift from God to Egypt and we didn't take care of it as we're supposed to....
and simple things like obeying the rules, everywhere ,in the street,in your office...etc. we always feel it's clever to try to beat the rules and not apply them..where the only one who suffer the consequences is you......

of course the things which we give more attention like football and too much drama for "Thawnya 3amma"...and the whole going to college issue...it's not the end of the world coz ur son entered dentistry instead of medicine......
