One of the major groups constituting the Republican base are Christian political groups. In the Christian tradition, sex between two people of the same gender is condemned by god.
It is reasonable to assume that if a representative from a heavily religious area is to maintain his/her attachment to the most important religion in their area (statistically Chistianity, if you're speaking of most parts of the US), then they must support it's tenets.
In addition, many representatives from heavily republican areas are practicing Christians themselves, and for them it is a sin to admit of the moral acceptability of actions which have been condemned by god in the Bible.

We are not afraid of gays, we don't approve of their life style but we don't go out of our way to oppress them.
gays go out of their way to throw their lifestyle in every ones face that is not right. They can get a civil union with all the rights of a marriage but it's not called a marriage why do they insist on having a marriage?
Conservatives hold marriage as a sacred bond between a man and a woman, we should not have to accept everything that gays want.

Why are Democrats ( or other lefties) afraid of not supporting gays.?
or afraid of not lambasting religious people.
By the way I 'm not religious, however, I am sick and tired of all religious people being blamed for everything. It was religion being hijacked by evil people over thousands of years that committed atrocities , not the grass roots necessarily.

Well, I'm a Libertarian, but tend to vote Republican because the left scares the hell out of me. And I have several gay friends - so I'm not afraid at all. In fact, I think every woman needs a good gay man in her life.
And for pity's sake! Not every gay person supports gay marriage - and not every Republican is against gay marriage.

They equate "gay" with "pervert." That is because that is how they do gay, you know, like solicitng pages, asking for a $20 for some action in the park, crawling into the next stall at airport restrooms, etc.

I have nothing against gays, but even Hillary thinks gay marriage or civil unions as she calls it should be left up to individual states.

Because the largest portion of voters in the Republican party, the ones who got out and voted for our current President, are values voters. If a republican candidate embraced gay rights as being a good thing, they would loose the republican grassroot support that they would need to win.
Sly, it's new testament teaching as well.

We're not afraid of them, we just want to uphold the bonds of marriage in America, so that we may implore God's favor for America.
How can you govern a people morally when you take away the ONLY moral code, Christianity?
Can you not see the chaotic flaw in your type of thinking???

For the same reason they don't want to be around thieves, murderers, or rapists.
Ok so maybe that's a bit of an overexaggeration, but a sin is a sin.
