Dr. Nina Simone was an African American singer, author and actress who travelled the world (particularly Africa) and influenced millions in blues, jazz and particularly soul music and art. Her accomplishments are so many and varied it is best to simply read the official Nina Simone biography as listed on her web site. I've pasted it below for you.

P.S. She passed away after an extended illness at her home in the south of France on April 21, 2003.
