The kids in band...stereotypically...are very committed to the activity. They focus on the work it takes to the extent that they seldom have time for extensive recreational activities with other kids. Once they are secluded from the general population, they are branded as "nerds" because the other teens who are caught up in the social scene cannot understand the intensity of the kid who truly loves band.

Persons who are jealous of others that can't even carry a tune or much less - don't know how to keep rhythm. By the simple means of "tapping there foot".
I've played in band through-out my elementary years & high school years. Instrument "French Horn" - And if I may add - Darn Good.
My son - who is now a senior @ UGA. Has gone most of his college years on a music scholarship now l@@king at finishing in "Pre-med" and going on to medical college. {Note : He too plays French Horn}
So ? All I can say is that if you are either interested in playing in the band or are currently playing in one… Don’t allow others to keep you from doing something that will possibility bring you enjoyment, self confidence & a better life style.
And besides doing this for you – A gift of “talent” from God is to be shared – And if you do this – you will surly reap the blessings from which he will give you and this will only multiply and your blessing will shower someone else who might need an “up-lifting hand”.
Who knows? May be even those who show some jealously towards you might be blessed with the talent that you have and could affect there lives in turn for the better.

There is nothing nerdy about it in fact it is very gratifying to be in bands. I have been in several over the years and enjoyed it very much. I can say if you were born to play you will no matter what. I started at age 14 and now I'm 56 and will still keep on til I can't go any further.

Nothing! If you travel around the world....(like I have) you will see that some of the most respected people are the musicians who dedicate their lives to one or 2 instruments. The backwards, bully society of high schools in the US say that band members are geeks. You are studying an ART! And this talent will never leave you. Keep it up!

It isn't the act of participating in the arts that was behind the association of nerd and band, it was that back in the day, schools were small, cheerleaders and football players were the pretty people and the less fortunate looking pursued the arts, and the so called pretty people labeled them, to feel superior. It is now just a left over, unbefitting term, band geek. Geeks get more beautiful and pretty people become as ugly outwardly as they are inwardly.

I was in the band, so I don`t think it was nerdy, but if you were in the band, you probably weren`t playing sports, which a lot of people (wrongly) find nerdy.

I don't know. But some the richest, and most powerful people in history were musicians.
Nero fiddled
Bill Clinton tooted his horn
Nixon tickled the ivories
Churchill slapped the spoons
And any number of rock/rap stars who have made more money than any of the people calling band members nerds, will ever make.

I don't know where it comes from. There is little that is more attractive to me that a gal that has musical talent. I especially like chello players for some reason. I find it very sexy and not at all nerdy or geeky.

Pshhhh. Don't let the haters stop you. Let them go and call you nerdy. In the end, you'll have come out of high school/middle school/whatever with a wonderful experience and a true talent.

[they, on the other hand, will probably come out of school with an STD. Nuh-asty.]
