a 1986 olds uses R-12. It is still sold in the USA, buy people who were smart enough to buy a whole lot of it before it became illegal to manufacture.
So, since I doubt you have a refrigerant license, you can't legally buy R-12, and I doubt anyone will sell it to you from a store or shop. most stores no longer have it anyway.
so you'd have to find a neighbor who has a lot of crud in the garage and see if he'll give you his R-12 cans, you'll need 3 plus 8 oz of oil.
What you could do is take advantage of retrofitting to R-134A, which is currently legal for anyone to buy.
you can get a kit for $40 at walmart.
the catch is, the procedure. for this to work, you must evacuate the entire system with a vacuum pump, so an a/c shop can do that. the oils from r-12 and r-134a do not like each other and will cause damage.
but once you vacuum, you'll be able to determine any leaks, fix those, by law in CA, it's a requirement.
anyway, put the new r-134a fittings on, and toss in the oil & freon and you should be ok.

You can't. Only a licensed and certified tech can refill R12 -- at $60 a POUND. You will save much more by simply purchasing a R134a retro-fit kit from auto zone for about $35.
