Need a little more info.
Is there a router involved?
Have you tried another cable?
Are you sure your modem is working properly?

Just because it says it is connected, doesn't mean it is connected to the outside world. Your network card can see the modem and tell you, "Connected"

I could be a winsock issue with out knowing all the info.
if you are on xp go to start run type in cmd click ok you will get a black box and type in this command netsh winsock reset and push enter that will then prompt you to restart your computer once it is back up try to surf also check and make sure in IE you do not have proxy turned on to check that go to tools internet options and click on conection and click on lan settings make sure nothing is checked if so uncheck it and try to surf

INFO about winsock
Most of the Internet connectivity problems arise out of corrupt Winsock settings. Windows sockets settings may get corrupted due to the installation of a networking software, or perhaps due to Malware infestation. You will be able connect to the Internet, but the packets won't transfer back and forth. And errors such as Page cannot be displayed may occur when using Internet Explorer. This article lists the methods (with links to third-party websites) to reset/repair the Winsock configuration to defaults.

I have had this happen before with my IBM Thinkpad. It usually happens when I am connected to a wireless network and then try to connect an ethernet cable to the laptop at the same time.

I have to say I agree with dunkin on this one. But you could also try using a different ethernet cord. Yours may have gotten pinched over or just gone bad. It will still show a connection there but won't send or receive properly.

Ok did you unplug or turn off your wireless connection? I dont think your router / gateway will allow you to have two computers with the same computer name to acces the network. use wireless or ethernet. unplug or turn off you wireless. connect your cat5. then release /all on you ip . then renew /all and you should get it done. if not try another cable. or reboot your router/gateway with the computer off and the start your computer.

What other equipment do you have: modem only or a router as well? What is the computer's IP address and default gateway when it says "connected"?

Have you paid your internet provider? if yes, give them a call first and let them know about your connectivity problem. It could be their modem or router. Either way, they can help you troubleshoot your problem.

Good luck my friend
