Yes thay can find each other, but whichever one has the internet connection is not routing it to the other. For that you need a router.

It's called "Internet Connection Sharing" and depending on how your "Laptop is seeing your Desktop" it should work.

You must have a router/switch of some sort being your laptop is seeing your desktop, otherwise I'm not sure how they'd see each other.

All in all this is a rather complicated setup and I would recommend googling for "Internet Connection Sharing" or call a geeky friend of yours over to help.

each and all the solutions seem interpreting your question in yet differently than I do. i've got faith you're saying the computers are related to the router with wires (ethernet cables) and you at the instant are not waiting to get a wifi sign. i could think of the router isn't wifi. If it does not have an antenna sticking up from the lower back, or specifically says that could be a instant router then it is not a instant router, yet quite a router basically. with the intention to apply your instant (wifi) adapter to get right of entry to the internet, you will desire a instant router. you ought to use it to boot to the router you have already got (a trick to place in), or purely replace the router you presently have. sturdy luck

You could make the computer attached to the internet share its internet with the internet sharing option
However that computer would have to be all the time
It would not be as good and powerfull a signal as a router
Get a router
Any brand on sale will do
