the poems I write have no meaning whatsoever, they're just words strung together, and people will ask me what they mean and I'll be like I don't know..like they'll sound like a distressed teenager going through a breakup, or a kid whose parents are going through a divorce but I'm not going through any of that. I'm a bright, happy person, even. but does poetry always have to make sense and have meaning that you can relate to?

Your poetry at the very minimum needs to make sense to you. I've written some things that have obscure references, but if asked I can say this is what it means, and they can see that it makes perfect sense. Strive for clarity in your work. As some have already mentioned poems are meant to communicate, to do that they have to make sense.

Not necessarily "meaning" in the sense of a story...but some tie that binds it together....emotion..color..
Post a poem and let's see it! (((-:

I like what the last poster said...your poem should communicate...and if it leaves your readers going "HUH?", you've probably missed the mark. That isn't to say that everyone will interpret your poem the same way....many times my English teachers had their ideas and I had completely different ones...but at least we had ideas. The poem communicated in some way. If it doesn't, it's just words on a paper and not a "true" poem..
I agree that a poem does not have to have rhyme...but it does need "reason". Even the craziest and most famous poets in history had "reason".

well-- you can write non-sense if you feel like it
but, I'm not sure that you can label that as poetry

the general idea of poetry is to convey an idea or a mental image -- in other words -- to communicate --- and -- to communicate -- one has to have something there to send that can be preceived on at least some level by the reader -- otherwise what you have is simply words and anyone can go to the dictiionary to find almost ALL of those !!

poetry is universal and has many different forms. you don't need to rhyme, make sense, have a lot of words, have good grammar or anything. It's such a type of writing that lets your emotions and thoughts flow without worry of a certain format. that is why poetry is so fun to write!

Poetry doesn't have to contain the slightest hint of rhyme or reason. As long as there are high school English teachers in the world, they'll MAKE it make sense.

Ah, the days I used to spend analyzing e.e. cummings...

When you write, does your poetry make sense to you at the moment of writing it? If so than maybe the answer lies in that particular moment. Besides, there will always be someone to whom it makes sense as there will be many to whom it doesn't.
