Due to certain circumstances my parents can't take me to this event I signed up for. Normally I would just drop out of it but this one we paid money for it. I don't have a ride so I would have to ride my bike to get to the area but my question is if I have to wear a helmet? I've heard that you'd get arrested if you don't wear a helmet. Is that true? (sorry, thats another question).

Thanks in advanced.

Also is there a website I can go to to find out if I'd get arrested or not?

Helmet would be the safest way to go.

Different communities abide by different rules. Where I live they would not arrest you for such a thing. Mostly they would ignore it. At the off chance you were caught they would issue a warning at the most

They changed the laws in California when I was a kid (about 12 years ago) such that you had to wear a helmet if you were under 18, and I basically didn't ride a bike again until halfway through college. Now that I'm 25, I do a lot of mountain biking and road biking and wouldn't dream of doing either without wearing a helmet.

I'm actually quite scared when I'm out road biking because not everything is under my control. You never know when a driver won't be paying close enough attention on a curve and will wander into the bike lane...where you might be just at that exact moment! There were several times in college where I was almost creamed while riding to and from school (95% of them were by VW bugs, too...). I feel safer on my mountain bike even though my riding style is much more risky because I don't have to worry about external threats as much; I can concentrate on whatever terrain I'm trying to get over.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and wear a helmet. You don't know what will happen, so why risk it?

Oh, and a fun fact, it's illegal for a bike store in England (and perhaps all of Europe) to sell a bike without a bell or some other noise maker affixed so you can alert pedestrians about your approach.

You won't get arrested, but you can get a ticket if there is a helmet law in your city.
It is a good idea to wear a helmet anyway, just in case. If your city has a "City Center" try calling and ask how you can find out if your city has a helmet law. Faculty at your school would probably know too.

No, you don't have to wear a helmet, albit you will get a ticket or warning in some states. But accidents happen, whether it's you, or someone else causing it to happen. I am sure you are a good rider, but not everyone is and there are some poor drivers out there if you are riding where there are cars. I am sure you don't want a big old dent in your head turning you into a human vegetable. Just wear it and be safe.

Here in Australia it is compulsory to wear a regulation bike helmet whenever you ride. It is not a arresting offense, only a fine.

It depends on your laws.

But it is better to ride using a helmet because a huge percent of accidents could have been avoided if they wore a helmet.
