I prefer band - I can't play strings. I wish I could play strings though, I make horrid noises come from a violin.
Honestly, it doesn't matter much either way which you do. The purpose of the program is to introduce you to music to see if you like it.
Learning to play an instrument takes time and dedication. If you're going to put in that effort, you should learn to play something you might enjoy. Listen to some music and see if there's an instrument that says "you should learn to play me" and if so form your decision from there.
Often, music class is a social activity as well as a learning activity. If you have friends doing one but not many doing the other, you may wish to decide that way.
You might pick based on your personality too. Violins, trumpets, and flutes tend to be more competitive folk than say clarinets and cellos. Saxes and basses tend to be more "laid back" and easy going (though they can grow an ego too). Drummers; you can always tell a future drummer, they tap on everything all the time. Thinking through this way, if you're highly competitive and want to play violin - that's the orchestra.
Consider the size of the instrument you pick too. There are no restrictions that say a tiny girl can't be a great tuba player (I've known some) but remember, a tuba is big and heavy... Conversely, the finest flute players in the world are men. No restrictions but know what your own limitations and motivations are.
Regardless of what anyone tries to tell you, there is no easy option. Learning to play a musical instrument is difficult.
Don't go at it with a negative attitude - you might like it. It may well end up being how you pay your way through college and how you make your living one day. If not, it at least helps to make you a well rounded person.

It is determined by what you care to do. I like to sing, so I'm in choir. Just please do not decide on whatever simply to be together with your peers or if it is a magnificence you suppose you can get an handy A in. Trust me, the opposite persons within the magnificence gets fairly frustrated for those who simply idiot round and do not pay any awareness in any respect. Band is plenty of a laugh for those who wish to be with plenty of persons, and the orchestra regularly sounds so lovely. So simply opt for what you suppose you'll experience probably the most.

band. orchestra is easier but band is funner. i think you play a wider range of songs and stuff. like you can play slow, pretty stuff, and then a march or a fight song. so far, i have only heard school orchestras play slow songs. actually, they do play a few upbeat ones, but they always sound kinda rustic. this is just the opinion of a band person.

I was in band . . .I'd try orchestra
depends on what you want to play
also you have to deal with strings that don't tune just right
in orchestra
go band . . .easier on the nerves
