Pricehillsaint is mostly correct, except that it was the Chicago White Stockings (the currrent Chicago Cubs) and the Boston Red Caps (the current Atlanta Braves) who have been in the National League since its inception in 1876. The Pittsburgh Alleghenys (today's Pirates) started in the American Association in 1882 and didn't join the National League until 1887.

Amongst the other "original eight" NL franchises that were in existence in 1901 (when the AL formed), the Phillies joined the NL in 1883 (and have the distinction of being the longest standing same name same city team in American sports), the Dodgers started as the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers in 1884 in the American Association and didn't join the NL until 1890 as the Brooklyn Bridgegrooms, the current incarnation of the Reds started as the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1882 in the AA and didn't join the NL until 1890, the Giants joined the NL in 1883 as the New York Gothams, and the Cardinals started in the AA in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings and didn't join the NL until 1892 as the St. Louis Browns.

I just checked my source. The oldest franchise playing continuously since its founding is in the National League. They started out as the Chicago White Stockings in 1876 and are now the Chicago Cubs. It is true that Cincinatti also started play that year, but they had a break of two years out of the majors in their history. The first team in Brooklyn (the Brooklyn Atlantics) didn't get started until 1884. The earlier version of the Atlantics is not considered to be a major league team.

Depends on the detail of your question

The first Professional team was the Cincinnati Red-Stockings in 1869.

The first organized team to play by the basic rules still used today was the New York Knickerbockers in 1845

The current Reds are not the same ones established in 1869.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Pilgrims (aka Atlanta Braves), I believe, were the only original members of the National League to survive since its conception in 1876. Teams like the Cardinals, Cubs, etc. broke loose from the NL to join the American Association, the United Association and other competitive leagues during the 1880s, only to return in and around 1892 to the NL.
