Last Friday I had peak type mucus (it had been building up for about 5 days) and spotting, lasted about 1/2 of friday. Then sat everything went normal. Then Sunday the spotting occured again. Rest of week was normal. Then today I get pain on my left side, like I do every month. Tonight I had mucus again. I don't think I was under any stress last week so I don't know why I would have a double peak. This mucus wasn't as good as last week but it was diffently the type of mucus to look for when natural family planning. So with the spotting, do you think my hormones are messed up?

A tricky pattern. I'm not really sure what's going on there, but I have a couple of ideas. I can't tell you which (if any) are correct, of course, but maybe you'll see an answer that matches what you think is going on too.

1. Sometimes, early in your cycle, maybe a week before ovulation, you lose a jelly-like mucous plug, that looks a little like EWCM. Then, your mucous builds up like normal, and you get the regular EWCM around ovulation.

2. Don't forget, when you're having unprotected sex, the semen can change the appearance of your CM, so its good to check your mucous at a time *before* sex (and that includes not checking first thing in the morning when you've had sex the night before).

3. If you've had really good sex (esp. to orgasm), you'll produce sperm-friendly mucous of an egg-white like consistency.

4. Spotting - I don't know a lot about spotting (bleeding pre-period). But, vigorous sex that bumps your cervix could cause a little bleeding. Some women also get spotting around ovulation. And, like you said, it could be a hormonal thing. (Especially if you recently came off the pill, and your cycles are still readjusting.) Do you normally have spotting?

Rule of thumb (with acronyms!) if you're not sure what's going on with your cycles is: When you see EWCM, TTC!

If you've miscalculated your cycle length or signs of fertility, better err on the safe side and keep TTC'ing!

Good luck, honey!
