I am going to sell my old PC, and want to remove all the programs from it, as they are all licensed to me. I thought I had successfully uninstalled all programs and Windows 98 (yeah, it's old!), but when I restarted, the backup kicked in and recovered Windows, all the programs I'd just removed, and a bunch of other programs that had been uninstalled ages ago. Help?!

start the computer
right before you'd normally see the windows logo, hit f8
choose command prompt

type "format c:" (without the quotes)
follow the instructions.

Tada!

Hope this helps

ad4354826 is slightly right. Ideally you want to do a full wipe of the drive as data can be recovered. However it is usually not necessary. If you are really worried about it, just buy a cheap hard drive and remove yours.

I'm not exactly sure how you would wipe out the hard drive with win 98. Why don't you just reformat the hard drive and it would be like new to a point. I know the way I do it is I have windows xp and I run that through setup and delete the old files off my hard drive and create a new ones with the xp disk. By the way good luck selling a computer with windows 98 on it. Good luck hope that helps

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Reformatting wont delete all the files it just removes the indexes pf the files, and it can be recovered. Its like removing the index of the book and expecting all the pages to disappear. Use a software like eraser to overwrite the disk with junk.
Note: if you use eraser on the drive you have installed windows, windows will be un-installed and re installation is required.

The link for eraser is :-> http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/

PS: It is free, great and works have been using it for about a year.

Format, Del tree,.........will not sanitize the hard drive.

Numerous inexpensive but NOT free products will wipe the hard drive clean. It's either use one of those or replace the hard drive prior to donation.

Darik's Boot & Nuke, free, will do what you need. It will erase the drive.

If you still have the Win98 or restore CD, you would do the buyer a big favor to include it.

smash the hard drive, burn it, put acid on it. a very effective way to get rid of everything on your hard drive. but scientists were doing an experiment by damaging a hard drive and the data was still recovered.
