Ancient Babylon--the civilisation which first invented writing. The epics of the gods were carved in stone of the temple walls--the first stories to be written down.

Other cultures of the age passed on the stories by word of mouth and rote memorisation.

The Bible or caveman drawings that described stories on cave walls. If not then Egyptian hieroglyphics tell stories. First story in English would be either the Dictionary or the translated Bible.
