“Just a goddamned piece of paper” — George Bush
Bush executive order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq [here]: If the Secretary of the Treasury thinks you are at risk of committing an act of violence [whether or not you actually have committed an act of violence] in order to protest the policies of the Iraqi government or the Bush administration’s policies to promote “economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq”, then the secretary of the Treasury can put a freeze on all your assets. Likewise if you are associated with such a person.
Bush executive order: Blocking Property of Persons Undermining the Sovereignty of Lebanon or Its Democratic Processes and Institutions [here]: Essentially the same as above, but for Lebanon, with one small difference - the freezing of property isn’t just restricted to people suspected of violent acts, but also non-violent ones. The order also bans any food and humanitarian aid to any anyone whose property is frozen, including the spouse or dependent child.
Bush presidential order [here]: The National Security Agency gains the authority to indiscriminately wiretap US citizens within the US without court approval.
Fourth amendment of the US constitution:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Free speech zones: When Bush travels around the United States, the Secret Service visits the location ahead of time and orders local police to set up “free speech zones” or “protest zones” where people opposed to Bush policies (and sometimes sign-carrying supporters) are quarantined. These zones routinely succeed in keeping protesters out of presidential sight and outside the view of media covering the event.
First amendment of the US constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Bush executive order: Protecting the Development Fund for Iraq and Certain Other Property in Which Iraq Has An Interest [here]: This order nullifies any legal proceedings against individuals or companies performing any oil related work in Iraq.
[I] find that the threat of attachment or other judicial process against the Development Fund for Iraq, Iraqi petroleum and petroleum products, and interests therein, and proceeds, obligations, or any financial instruments of any nature whatsoever arising from or related to the sale or marketing thereof, and interests therein, obstructs the orderly reconstruction of Iraq, the restoration and maintenance of peace and security in the country, and the development of political, administrative, and economic institutions in Iraq. This situation constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States and I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat
Unless licensed or otherwise authorized pursuant to this order, any attachment, judgment, decree, lien, execution, garnishment, or other judicial process is prohibited, and shall be deemed null and void, with respect to the following…
Indefinite imprisonment of US citizens on US soil without trial: Not only has the US government arrested and indefinitely detained countless foreigners, but there have been several cases [e.g. here] of US citizens being apprehended on US soil and held indefinitely in military prisons without trial.
Sixth amendment of the US constitution:
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.
