Sociopaths can pass a lie detector test if it is to their benefit to do so. They have no conscience and can justify any answer as being true....thus no reaction on the test.

A lie detector is not admissible in a Canadian court and here is why

It is not a magic piece of machinery it takes blood pressure pulse heart rates temperature etc

It relies on the theory that when you lie you will have an emotional reaction of guilt or tension to the lie you have just told -

If you don't care - if you are a sociopath etc then the lie caused no concern to them and so the body does not react to the lie , because the mind has not reacted to the lie

So yes a sociopath or someone convinced they are telling the truth or someone who just does not give a dam can make a lie detector test a mockery -

Further to that if you are extremely nervous or emotional as a person - it can falsey read "lie" A really good reader of the machine may see through it - Or they may just conclude that you are lieing

Lie detectors measure physiological reactions to lying. A sociopath does not have the same sense of right and wrong that others have. Sometimes they are able to fool a lie detector.

Sometimes -- it depends on how the detector is configured.

Sociopathy is, by itself, a lack of conscience -- it is not always a lack of emotion, though it sometimes is combined with that condition.

Someone who is a sociopath can pass a lie detector that's based on stress metrics -- because the person feels no stress (given their lack of guilty) over lying.

But they cannot beat one that measures cognitive function, since the areas of the brain dealing with recall (necessary for telling the truth) versus imagination (necessary for lying) are still different, even if there is no emotional impact with lying.

Most psychologists and other scientists agree that there is little basis for the validity of polygraph tests. Courts, including the United States Supreme Court (cf. U.S. v. Scheffer, 1998), have repeatedly rejected the use of polygraph evidence because of its inherent unreliability.

Someone brags that they're a pathological liar? At least those in proximity are forewarned.

With some practice, almost anybody can beat a polygraph. The trick is to not give a damn whether you're going to get caught or not, which admittedly, might be a bit difficult for normal decent people. The toughest part isn't beating the machine itself, but rather beating the person who's operating it and interpreting the results. The polygraph is only as good as the guy using it.
