I have a '02 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, lately my cars transmission has had what I call the hiccups. Sometimes when I'm idle at a stop light the RPM's which usually idle at about 900 fall to about 200 very quickly then just up to about 1500. Also, sometimes when I accelerate the RPM's drop suddenly, which makes the cars practically stop. It usually happens between 2nd and 3rd gear. I've taken it to the shop for a "diagnostic" but of course they weren't able to recreate the problem. I was told I needed to wait until it got worse. I think it's a censor, but what the heck do I know. I'd love to get others who more versed in auto repairs opinions to give me some ideas... Thanks!

Some more info: When the car is standing still and the RPMs drop then shoot back up the car does lurch forward.

Also the car has about 75,000 miles, and just had an oil change including a fuel system cleaning and new air and obviously oil filter.

The problems occurs when the engine is cool and when the engine is warm. It has happened pulling out of my drive way, it has happened after I've been driving for a while. I haven't found a pattern.

Well now the "Service Engine Soon" light is on. So something must be calling out for help. Hopefully now they shop will be able to figure out the problem.

I don't think its the transmission, probably the engine or computer.

Could be an engine hiccup too. When it drops standing still does it feel like it lurches forward or drops revs? Lurching forward relates to the transmission but if engine revs drop before the lurch then possibly part of an engine problem. Is the engine cold when it near stalls with a rapid acceleration? Engine tuning, cam belt if they have one. Loose intake hoses, and yes an array of sensors i'm sure. The cars onboard computer can usually do a self diagnostics for most of the sensors in the engine management system. In the "diagnostics" I assume they were checking on the trans? If they ran a diagnostic on the engine then possibly they would have done an exhaust carbon monoxide reading and that would tell of the emissions and tuning of the engine. Again not knowing the car but assuming your pollution laws are similar they will have readings for the co level. If the engine was cold when near stalling it may again be any of these issues or none! Sorry sidetracked! With the onboard diagnostics if you can purchase a Repair manual produced by one of the aftermarket companies it will usually give you the procedure and the code relevant to your particular model. If it's a transmission problem take it to a specialist in the area as they can usually diagnose from past experience and that's all they do. Hope this helps.

Buy yourself an OBD2 code reader and read the booklet that comes with it you should get a code from it if one is generated they vary in price up to a few hundred bucks but pay for themselves. If your rpm drops to 200 from 900 is this when you shift from park to drive? Have you looked for loose connections and listened for a vacuum leak? Have you looked under the car to see if the transmission is wet or if something is unplugged? Have you checked your fluid? Is the cooler line damaged? Check these things out and add a comment I'll try and give you more info.

Make sure all your filters are clean..air/cabin/fuel ect..then make sure you are not leaking any fluids on the ground under the car. That may mean you are low on a fluid. Check spark plugs and gaskets on the motor..
The transmission is what puts your car in gear..that would not be the RPM's. Good Luck!

This is symptomatic of a fuel pump dying. I had a VW GTI that did this and I ignored it until it started stalling at lights or stop signs. Got a freebie under warranty.

Good Luck!

The tourque convertor is known to have this problem in this car, the cheap fix is to unplug the wires for the tourque convertor lockup. most people don't notice it.

Does sound like the fuel pump or maybe the fuel injectors.

it extremely is possable that an axleshaft broke or something happen to transmission.get it to a restoration save which you believe and tell them to envision axles till now they inform you its the transmission.the clarification i think of its an axle is by way of the fact once you place it in park it is going to no longer pass backwards in any respect in spite of if trany is blown. whilst an axle breaks it cant lock transmission to drivetrain so automobile rolls away on you

I am certain its not a tranny problem. It may be a PCM problem.
