After the third time it has gone out this year, my front headlight doesn't work after we changed the bulb. The other times it had gone out all we did was change the bulb and it was fine, but now it won't work. We don't know what it can be. We checked the fuses and they all seem fine. I don't want to take it to a mechanic and pay money I don't have if it's something I can fix at home. Please help!!

P.S. It's a 1997 Nissan Sentra.

Check for corrosion in the plug that goes to the headlight. A poor connection on the ground will cause the bulb not to light. Use a test light to test for power at the connector.

If it is just a blown bulb, then replace it before you take the car for test. If you don't get to fix it beforehand, the MOT station WILL FAIL the car. Assuming the car doesn't fail on anything else, then the garage should then be able to change the bulb for you (may or may not charge labour to do this), and then do a fast track pass (no extra charge). It counts as a minor, same day repair thus avoiding any re-test fee. Good luck.

Ok, if it is just 1 light that isn't working, you are looking at an electrical wiring or mounting problem. Find the wiring harness behind the light and look for cracked or worn wires. Find the ground wire, that will mount to something metal, make sure it is tight, if the ground wire is broken, then the circuit cannot complete and it won't turn on. If you find a bad section of wire, replace it and see if your headlight works,

Might be a faulty ground connection or a short. Just trace the wires back from the bulb. Use Liquid Electrical Tape over any abrasions you find. Clean off and reconnect the ground wire.

I'm afraid the wiring to your light has a short in it... & I don't think there's anything YOU can do about it. You have 2 choices; you can pay a mechanic big bucks to fix it- OR (& this is probably your best bet) you can start looking for a new car- using THIS one as a Trade-in. Sorry. Good luck.
