For many shelters it's true. Most around here give the animals a week. If no one claims the animals, then they're put to sleep. Often, if the shelter people really think a dog/cat would make a good pet, they'll contact a rescue group like the SPCA to come and get the dog and find it a new home.
It's sad, so many people are irresponsible and don't spay/nuteur their pets. Suddenly there are more than they know what to do with and they dump them on the side of the road or at shelters. The shelter people absolutely don't want to do it, but you can only take in so many animals at a time.
I give money to such shelters when I can, so they'll be able to give the animals the best care possible. The one in our city right now is taking donations so they can build a bigger building so they'll be able to keep more animals at a time. ^.^ Yay for them!

That is sad but true. Many shelters are so full that they cannot keep animals for too long.
My daughter had 2 cats. They were the sweetest animals. One of her cats would give you a hug. She could not keep them and she thought the humane society would be the best place for them to go She knew that the shelter would find them a wonderful home. She was so wrong. The way they check to see if an animal is friendly is if the cat comes to the door of the cage when someone is near. Well, her cats were afraid and stayed near the back of the cage so they were considered to be unfriendly cats. They were both put to sleep the next day. How sad that was for us.

Yeah it is actually not that long. I found out a lot about them while I was searching for my lost cat and when I adopted a cat. If they are microchipped but the information is not up to date so they can't get in touch with the owners they will keep them there for two weeks. In that time if anyone wants to adopt that pet the pet will still be kept there for the whole two weeks. If the owners come back they take the cat or dog home. If not at the end of the two weeks the new owners can adopt the pet. If it is not microchipped they get one week at the most to get adopted. Sometimes it is less if they have too many and they run out of room. They also get put down sooner if they seem to be vicious and could harm the staff.

Thousands of animals are put to sleep daily in shelters. And it is usually after about a week.
The no kill shelters will keep their animals until they locate a home.
Many people have no idea of the number of animals that pass thru shelters daily. They have to weed out the aggressive animals, sick and injured animals, old animals these animals basically take up space and are 99% less likely to get a home.
Most people go into a shelter with unrealistic demands

Yes, unfortunately, it is true. So many people are getting rid of their pets if they are old or not as cute as they were. Shelters can't keep up with all of the pets they have, and for that reason, I will say that I would feel horrible if I went to one, all of those eyes. I have to hand it to animals, I still am not immune to 'the look'. One frown breaks my heart. It is a very sad thing that so many animals must go through it.

Sadly, it's true, unless it's a no-kill shelter. :(
