I have a big scar on my upper left arm from the DPT (I think) mess they used to give us in school. We used to get innoculations all the time and I can remember my arm aching like crazy and being all red and swollen. My first husband had his on the top of his right thigh, it was as big as my thumb.

The only vaccination scar I have is from small pox vaccine...the first took, gave the expected pustual, the second (years later) did not take, as I was immune. Are you sure this is not what you mean? To my knowledge, DPT leaves no scars. Small Pox vaccinations were discontinued long ago when the last cases were past reporting. Lately, new cases have been found, and it may be that we will have to have them again. It was not that long ago when the only source known of Small Pox was at the CDC..talked of destroying it, but decided against it when new cases were found in 3rd world countries. good luck

I have it too. Upper left arm. I don't remember it hurting, but I remember being sick a lot from the time I got that shot and through out that year. I think it made me more sick than it helped me. I think it brought down my immune system and then on top of which I had just started school and wasn't used to being around all those germs from other families and going out into the cold air every morning.

Smallpox vaccinations were given when I was in grade school (started school in 1946).
The reason the vaccination leaves such a large scar (not counting the fact that as you get older -- and larger -- your skin stretches, and so will the scar) is that it was necessary to abrade the area before applying the weakened live virus.
The way vaccines work is that the weakened live virus gives you a mild case of the illness so that when you are exposed to a stronger strain of the virus it will not affect you.

Hilton Hottie is right. It has nothing to do with DTP. It's a small pox vaccination and they don't give those any more which is why you don't see people younger than mid thirties with a scar like that.
I think your husband's scar is probably just a scar that he doesn't remember the injury it came from, as they didn't do smallpox vaccinations on the thigh...

Yep! It is located on my left arm as well. I do not know what it was for as I was so young but, I remember them scratching my skin...at least, that is what it felt like at the time. I know that I did not feel well later that day...not sure why?
I do remember my Mom telling me that I was not a very good little girl. I do not remember why but, I've a feeling I must have resisted before they ever touched mas as I certainly recall them doing so!
I will say, mine is not too big but, it is very circular! Most all I have ever seen, have been pretty much a circle, like mine.

I used to have a mark on the top of my left arm as a child, but it has since disappeared. I too thought that we were being stuck a whole lot more than necessary when I was a kid at school. But you should try joining the Armed Forces. It seemed that we were getting another shot or two every week through the whole of basic training! (But it's a lot better than suffering from some tropical disease in a war zone, I suppose!) And don't even get me STARTED on the training we had to undergo for chemical warfare!! (Where the EASIEST part was learning how to inoculate YOURSELF!)

I have the same scar on upper arm. I do not remember getting it so it must have been given to me at a very early age.
Not sure when they stopped giving it, I was born in 69 and sister in 74. I'm not sure if she has scar or not?

Small Pox vaccination scar, most people from 1946 through 1954 have them, I do not, because I was taking ballet at the time. Mine used to be on my right hip.

Yes, I still have the scar from when I got my vaccination. Two of my sons also got the vaccination, but when the third son was born in 1972, they weren't giving vaccinations anymore.
