So I don't get it what your question really is. I don't think people should really classify themselves as one or the other because everyone is both. Everyone is not always liberal about every single issue and the same goes for being conservative. People are liberal about some things and conserative about other issues.

Personally I've found that those labels are limiting, and that people tend to selectively embrace the best-case-scenario of either liberalism or conservatism, and conveniently gloss over the limitations of their own doctrine in the process. Neither is the end-all, be-all solution to all of society's ills in other words, the belligerence between liberals and conservatives notwithstanding.
