And what to you would constitute sobriety: lack of chemical impairment or rationality of thought or perhaps some other measure....?

So Sean you're saying that mild impairment is a virtue?

Marian, you could say that sobriety is under assault by the medical profession and pharmaceutical industry I suppose. This brings up an ethical argument against over prescribing mood altering drugs ( I worked with a guy who was on 15 drugs and was still nutso, poor sod).

Sobriety to me constitutes as abstinence from mind altering substances such as alcohol or drugs whether it be prescription or non prescription.I think as a whole its a virtue.Obviously mild consumption of alcohol is fine, even great consumption on occasion but not on a frequent basis. It lowers ones IQ for one thing and impairs cognitive functioning and exacerbates whatever mood you happen to find yourself in,which isn't great when you're feeling a bit sad!I also disagree with the great number of clinical prescriptions for drugs these days as it dulls and blights our natural thought and doesn't get to the root of the problem, just veils it over for a while! And fun drugs obviously kill people so they're not so fun!!Sobriety is indeed a virtue!

No...moderation and self-control are virtuous, at least in my eyes. The absence of alcohol, for example, would exclude a lot of good times. On the other hand, too much alcohol, would exclude a lot of good times, or at least normal everyday functioning times. A lot of people need to stay away from substances because they can't handle the freedom to choose to do or not to do it whenever they want. I am no exception to this rule. I have one substance that could have definitely gripped me right by the b*lls and pulled me under because of my lack of control. Cheers!!!

Conscientious maintaining for coherence in mind and spirit is sobriety. You judge as you learn what is negative. The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

No. Virtue is more than the absence of vice.
