Yes, the social security number. Is that the key?

Technically, your MD should have you sign a legal release allowing him/her to have access to any old medical records and to contact any former physicians.

There is no "permanent record". And HIPPA laws are in place to protect your privacy.

well, only if you get you record sent to the new Dr. Or you give them the name of your old Dr, Or now a days , your imformation is generally on a medical comp, with your name and birthdate, and or social security number.

Unfortunately, they can check on more than you think. Where I live, the hospital has access to my doctors records who in turn has access to my hospital records, etc., etc. Too much information being passed around if you ask me. And just try to limit them...ha!...they won't see you.

Unless they go through your insurance (and all your doctors have gone through your insurance) there's not really a centralized record of what doctors you have been to.

I would think it would be illegal without your consent.. with all of the HIPPA protocols...
