a check I wrote to car dealership almost two months ago hasn't been deposited yet...how long before they can't deposit it any longer....and what does it mean to me?

6 months. What it means is that you need to call them and tell them to put the check thru or you will stop payment. Then see how fast they deposit it. Sounds like the bookkeeping dept. is stupid.

Banks today usually have a policy of if a check is more then 3 months old from the written date it must be disgarded. This is very bad business to keep undeposited checks lying around. I highly recommend that you contact the car dealership were you wrote the check to and ask them about it. If this doesnt work then cancel the check and write them another one.

Call your bank. Call the dealership. You can stop payment on the check at any time for a fee. It is a nuisance since you have to constantly maintain a covering balance without earning interest on it. If you did not write a date limit on the check, which most of us don't, state law applies and the bank can tell you that.
